I can’t believe it, but spring will officially be here in a few weeks. I can’t wait for the change of season, spring and summer are my favorites! Last year we had a long, beautiful spring here in Virginia. I hope we will have the same this year. But for many people, spring is dreaded because of the seasonal threats that come with the blooming flowers and fresh new growth as mother earth awakens from her winter slumber. In fact, at night you can already see the beginning signs of allergens in the air. Hold a flashlight up in the dark outside, and when allergens are present you can see what looks like dust in the air. Not dust my friend, allergens!
Allergens are substances that can cause an immune response in some people. Allergens are typically harmless to most individuals, but to those with allergies, the immune system mistakenly identifies these substances as a threat and overreacts. This immune response can lead to symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, runny nose, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing. Common allergens include pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds, dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and certain foods. Let’s get a jump on allergy season, here are some recommendations to address allergies with natural solutions.
🌺- First, minimize your exposure to known allergens that impact you.
· If you have pet allergies, bath your pets regularly and keep them well groomed.
· Minimize allergens coming indoors by keeping windows closed on high allergen alert days. Stay inside as able when allergens are present, clean your air filters regularly, dust, and vacuum your home more often.
· If you do go outside, change your clothes when you come inside and don’t wear them again before washing. Bath and wash your hair after coming inside to get rid of all allergens you may have picked up in your clothes or on your body.
🌺 Eat locally produced foods. Local honey is a great example of a food that will help your body build immunity to your regional allergens.
🌺 Diffuse your favorite essential oils to clean the air, and some essential oils are very good for helping with respiratory and seasonal threats. Immediately I think of Air-X and Breathe for respiratory support. Air-X was developed for the Asian markets where pollution is a daily fact of life in the major cities. For fighting seasonal threats ether/oxides such as Eucalyptus, Siberian Fir, Fennel, and Ravintsara are very cleansing as well as supporting to the respiratory system. These oils can be diffused alone or with complimentary oils to create a beautiful aroma that works for you during allergy season. Think of combining them with your favorite citrus oil.
